Review
This story is about friendship, healing, magic clay and dangerous earthquakes!!!
This book is about Etan, a young boy who stopped talking the day his mother left. Everyone says it’s going to be ok, that she will come back when she is better. But Etan knows how empty words can be. Then he meets Malia, a young girl with eczema, and he starts seeing how healing words and friendship can be. And how healing the clay from his homeland is as well… It’s almost magical…
This book was a very fun story! Written in prose, it is full of friendship, hope and healing. (Both physically and internally) I loved the message of overcoming your struggles with help from loved ones. There are some sad topics. Mention of health issues, mental issues, bullying, earthquakes, injures and such. It isn’t gory, but some injures and illness are mentioned. There is also a weird mention on page 4 of kids saying Colt isn’t a real boy. But the name Colt doesn’t show up in the book at all! Jut that weird mention so…
Overall, this is a great clean book for kids!!! I enjoyed it and totally suggest it! Happy Reading! -The Young Llama Reader.
Pros
- A great novel about friendship!
- For boys and girls 10 and up!!!
Cons
- Some sad topics…
Etan has stopped speaking since his mother left. His father and grandfather don’t know how to help him. His friends have given up on him.
When Etan is asked to deliver a grocery order to the outskirts of town, he realizes he’s at the home of Malia Agbayani, also known as the Creature.
Malia stopped going to school when her acute eczema spread to her face, and the bullying became too much.
As the two become friends, other kids tease Etan for knowing the Creature.
But he believes he might have a cure for Malia’s condition, if only he can convince his family and hers to believe it too. Even if it works, will these two outcasts find where they fit in?
