Review
I have been so excited about this book for months!!! And not just because I illustrated a sketch in the book, (though that did help!) but because I love C. D. Ross’s western adventures! And this novel takes you on a crazy ride!
This book is about Hannah Baker, a young women who inherited her uncle’s very cluttered estate. Unbeknown to her, she also inherited a 100 year-old diary telling of one girls journey through the Oregon Trail. Reading about Amelia’s past and heartbreaks is thrilling, but trying to find the rightful heirs to the precious diary is difficult. Especially since it seems Amelia couldn’t quite decide her own fate with 3 very different men. Can the mystery be solved?…
This book was so good and full of so many interesting fun facts! Your reading between so many different perspectives it’s crazy fun! The novel goes from modern day time with Hannah and Lucas, to all the way to 1892 with Amelia, Tacoma the Native scout, Andrew the preacher with the past and James the cowboy with the skill of a surgeon. The novel is full of adventure, hardships, romance and what the Oregon Trail was really like.
Now, this book is fantastic, but be warned it is not all sunshine and roses! It is a historically accurate novel of the trail. People die, get poisoned, get hurt and injured. Mention of flash floods drowning people, wagons falling on people, blood and raids happening as well. Sometimes you have to sit and ponder what you just read in your air-conditioned living room because the novel feels sooooo real! (I am very thankful to be in 2025 and no 1892. I don’t care if people are crazy, at least we have indoor plumbing!!!!) I would say this book would be for teens and adults not kids. Probably 13 and up because of the length and the story line.
Overall, what an amazing read. I enjoyed taking my time with this novel and very much suggest it to you all! Especially since it’s by self-published Christian author!!!! (And also because my arts in it. Go check out pages 193 and 197!!!!!) Be prepared for a very action-packed, slightly traumatizing, Oregon Trail adventure with a cliff hanger! -The Young Llama Reader.
