Review

A great book about friendship and fixing your mistakes, Breaking the Ice by Gail Nall is perfect for girls 8 and up!

This book is about Kaitlin, a young girl with big ice skating dreams. The only issue is, she had a meltdown in front of the judges and got kicked out of her ice skating club. Now Kaitlin is stuck at the run-down Fallton Club, a place all the other skaters make fun of. And she also has to fix her mistakes and show the world she’s worth the gold! With bullies, tough competition and a boy who is trouble, Kaitlin not be ready for her performance…

This is a simple read filled with humor, friendship and great characters! The MIX books are some of my favorites and ones I always suggest to young girls. Honestly, it is such a clean story. There is bullying and such, but nothing extreme. It is a great book for anyone!

Overall, a simple read but a great one! I totally suggest this story to little girls who dream of ice skating! Happy Reading! -The Young Llama Reader.

Pros

  • A great book for girls 8 and up!
  • Funny and full of friendship!!!

Cons

  • Bullying

Kaitlin has always dreamed of being a champion figure skater, and she’s given up a lot to pursue her passion. But after she has a totally uncharacteristic tantrum at a major competition, she’s dropped by both her coach and her prestigious skating club.

When no other club will have her, she’s forced to join the ridiculed and run-down Fallton Club, jokingly referred to as the “Fall Down Club.” At first Kaitlin thinks this is a complete disaster, but after meeting some of the other skaters—including a boy who happens to have the most perfect hair she’s ever seen—she realizes it might not actually be so bad.

Yet learning a whole new program right before regionals is a huge challenge, and when she realizes that all the other area skaters target Fallton for pranks, she begins to wonder if joining the Fall Down Club has any upside.
