Ok, I have a problem… I am completely obsessed with Keeper of the Lost Cities. In like a semi-sad way since I have 2 copies of the series, plus the Illustrated and Annotated version of book one and now the Graphic Novel… But sometimes, kids books are just better than adult books!
This book is a special adaptation of Keeper of the Lost Cities book 1. Set in a graphic novel filled with fun artwork, this story follows Sophie Foster, a girl who has never been normal since she can read other peoples minds. But when she meets Fitz and finds out he can also read minds, she finally finds out what she really is… An Elf. Now she is in a world of magic and mystery where everything seems perfect… but underneath all the glitter and shine there are secrets that might just change her new world forever…
So, I love KOTLC. Always have, always will. I’ve been reading these books for years and can’t wait for book 10 to come out!!!! However, this year instead of a 700 page book, I got a 330 page graphic novel that is a version of book 1 of the series. Now this is a very clean book. Part 1 of the novel doesn’t really have any violence, (This series does have kidnapping, fires, murders and fighting, so it will be interesting how they illustrate that) but part 1 of the book is just Sophie adjusting to her new world. So it is filled with beautiful art, fun scenes and is perfect for kids 8 and up looking for a fun version of their favorite series!
My only ‘cons’ about this novel is number one it’s not a “book”-book. This is just my opinion, but I am not really a Graphic Novel kind-of girl. I love a good heavy, filled with words book. But this one is a fun adaptation of my favorite series so I do like it. My other ‘con’ is a bit harder to explain. Since this isn’t a line-by-line rewrite of book 1, some lines were changed to fit in better. But one of the lines felt like it was pushing an agenda. On page 234 two characters are talking and one character says that all his mentors/professors have crushes on him. This character is jokester so he is mostly teasing, however in the original book the line says the his female professor has a crush on him. Not ALL of the professors, just the one lady. So I personally feel like this is a weird rewrite that is hinting at something, but nothing else shows up in the book so it is still pretty clean and safe for kids to read.
Overall, I did enjoy this novel but yet again I wish I could of read book 10 instead. I love art in books, just not a comic book… However, this would be a fantastic Christmas gift for any KOTLC fans!!! Hope you all have a beautiful day! -The Young Llama Reader.
