Review

This book is a wonderful look at immigrant families in America. Showing the truth about the conditions, homes and lives of the people making their way to the US. And it done in stunning detail!

This book is about Mia Tang, a young girl who just moved to the US from China. But not everything is amazing as she thought it would be in America. With her family working overtime at a motel and not being paid. Now Mia is working the front desk, hoping to help her family and friends. But how can she help when there is dangerous people, bullies in school and the stress of hiding other immigrants.

This book is wonderfully done!!! Going over hard topics and racism with hope and humor. I loved the way the novel showed how anyone can be family. And even though this book has sad parts, it is still a happy book that kids 9 and up would love!

There is racism in the book. Mention of people judging eachother for everything. White people judging black people, Asian people judging white people, basically everyone is having issues with it. There is violence as well, mention of fighting, blood and wounds. The book does not hide anything. So be warned.

Overall, this book is a great novel for kids! Even though it talks about some hard topics, it is a great book for anyone to read. -The Young Llama Reader.

Pros

  • A wonderful book about finding family!
  • Great for kids 9 and up!!!

Cons

  • Racism…
  • Some violence…

Mia Tang has a lot of secrets.

Number 1: She lives in a motel, not a big house. Every day, while her immigrant parents clean the rooms, ten-year-old Mia manages the front desk of the Calivista Motel and tends to its guests.

Number 2: Her parents hide immigrants. And if the mean motel owner, Mr. Yao, finds out they’ve been letting them stay in the empty rooms for free, the Tangs will be doomed.

Number 3: She wants to be a writer. But how can she when her mom thinks she should stick to math because English is not her first language?

It will take all of Mia’s courage, kindness, and hard work to get through this year. Will she be able to hold on to her job, help the immigrants and guests, escape Mr. Yao, and go for her dreams?
