Review
I read this book a long time ago and then completely forgot it. (So long ago I didn’t even review it!) So when I picked it up at a used book sale, I decided to give it a 2nd chance; and I’m glad I did because it is fun, engaging and filled with adventure!
This book is about a thief named Alfie McQuinn, a notorious cat burglar who ends up falling off a roof one foggy night. With his dying breath he tells his son to find Jewels, but not a pile of riches, Jules is March McQuinn’s twin sister. Having been separated for years, the twins are now stuck together in a group home with no way out except to turn to a life of crime. And the crime they are committing just happens to be the cursed jewels that might just be the thing that killed their mother and now will end them too…
This book was loads of fun! Filled with humor and mystery (plus plenty of heists!) it is a novel that keeps you reading till the very end! I thoroughly enjoy heist movies and books, so this series was a blast for me. Obviously there is some violence and death in the book. Someone falls off a roof and dies, it’s a bit described but not detailed. And there is also a kid in the book who says “Girls aren’t my thing” and it is confirmed in book 2 with a boyfriend comment. So be warned about that, but it is only the 2 sentences.
The only other warning I feel is necessary is that the book has these moonstones that might be “cursed”. They float in air, reflect non-existence moonlight and predicted death. (As a Holy Ghost filled Christian, I don’t really care about the “curse”.) The book isn’t voo-doo or anything, it’s just some jewels that seem to weigh you down.
Overall, I very much enjoyed this novel!!! It is a great book for boys 9 and up! Totally funny, very good, can’t wait for book 2!!!!!!!!!!!! -The Young Llama Reader.
Pros
- An amazing book about family and thievery!
- Totally fun, totally interesting and totally worth it!!!
Cons
- Some violence and obviously stealing.
- 1 mention of a guy not into girls…
On a foggy night in Amsterdam, a man falls from a rooftop to the wet pavement below. It’s Alfie McQuinn, the notorious cat burglar, and he’s dying. As sirens wail in the distance, Alfie manages to get out two last words to his young son, March: “Find jewels.”But March learns that his father is not talking about a stash of loot. He’s talking about Jules, the twin sister March never knew he had.
No sooner than the two find each other, they’re picked up by the police and sent to the world’s worst orphanage. It’s not prison, but it feels like it.March and Jules have no intention of staying put. They know their father’s business inside and out, and they’re tired of being pushed around. Just one good heist, and they’ll live the life of riches and freedom most kids only dream about.
Watch out! There are wild kids on the loose and a crime spree coming …
