Review
This book is a masterpiece of love, hope and peace in a time of war. It is heart-warming while also moving you to tears. I love Tara Johnson’s novels, but my goodness do they hurt to read!
This book is about a young women looking for her place in the world. With her stammering tongue, Cadence Piper has always struggled to find her purpose. When she sets her sights on becoming a nurse, she is pushed away because of her age and beauty. Determined to succeed she meets Dr. Joshua Ivy, a man who has suffered to much to allow her in to his heart. But with war right around the corner, and dark secrets leading to danger; these two brave souls will have to work all through the night to find the light that God has given them in their time of need…
This book was amazing!!!!!!! You don’t laugh while reading it, but you do smile. You smile at the Love of God that pours out of the pages every time a slave is freed. You smile every time a lost soul is found. And you smile at the hope a simple hymn brought to so many wounded souls on the battle fields of the Civil War… The masterpiece of a novel will move you to tears and cause you to thank God for bringing America out of that dark time. No matter where are world is now, I am so thankful my brothers and sisters in Christ are all free today.
Now since this is a Civil War novel, it is not kid friendly. There is war, blood, death, rot and more. The characters are physicians so there is a lot hospital talk. Mention of limbs being removed, mention of bullets wounds, cuts, and such. Nothing is detailed, but it is in the book. There is even a sentence where there is a barrel of limbs… Not described but ew! There is also talk about slaves. Mention of mistreatment, especially women and young girls who “warmed beds” which is vile. Mention of slaves who were on the auction block undressed and treated horribly. Not described, but it is mentioned in passing. It breaks your heart how evil this world can be…
There is also talk about adult topics. Nothing is detailed or inappropriate, however it is not kid-friendly. 18 and up only. Mention of a wedding night and being together. Also mention of swimming together on that night which was weird, but it wasn’t descriptive. There are some kissing scenes and such, but everything is very clean. Just written for adults.
Overall, if you are looking for a book about the Civil War filled with romance on the battlefield, this is a great choice for you! I can not wait to read more by this author soon!!! – The Young Llama Reader.

With her stammering tongue and quiet ways, Cadence Piper has always struggled to be accepted. After the death of her mother, Cadence sets her heart on becoming a nurse, both to erase the stain her brother has left on the family’s honor and to find long-sought approval in the eyes of her father. When Dorothea Dix turns her away due to her young age and pretty face, Cadence finds another way to serve . . . singing to the soldiers in Judiciary Square Hospital. Only one stubborn doctor stands in her way.
Joshua Ivy is an intense man with a compassionate heart for the hurting and downtrodden. The one thing he can’t have is an idealistic woman destroying the plans he’s so carefully laid. When the chaos of war thrusts Cadence into the middle of his clandestine activities, he must decide if the lives at stake, and his own heart, are worth the risk of letting Cadence inside.
Everything changes when Joshua and Cadence unearth the workings of a secret society so vile, the course of their lives, and the war, could be altered forever. If they fight an enemy they cannot see, will the One who sees all show them the way in the darkest night?
