Review
Oh my goodness is this series absolutely stunning! The adventure, the mystery, the COVERS!?!?! I just love these books and I most definitely suggest it to boys and girls 8 and up who love a good adventure in the wild Florida of the nineteen hundreds!
Set in the wilderness of South Florida, Lulu is thrilled to be back home and away from her boring boarding school. With big plans this summer, she is excited to begin looking for the next scientific discovery with her sister Frankie and her friend Algie. But when Frankie gets injured and Algie gets a job, Lulu is on her own… That is till she meets Vic, a blind boy who’s new too town. With ghost pirates hunting the bay, smugglers causing trouble and parents to prove wrong; these 4 kids are ready for a summer of a lifetime that will hopefully won’t end their lives while their at it…
What a amazing book! The first novel in the series is told by Algie’s point of view going through his struggles with asthma. But book 2 is in Lulu’s point of view. It goes through her summer of being ignored by her father, belittled by her sister and looking for a way to make herself seen. It is full of fun adventure and tons of cool sneak-peeks into what the wilderness of Florida looked like. It is a great novel that focuses on friendship and action in a world of deceit!!!
Now there is some violence in the book. Mention of blood and animal cruelty. Spoiler, a sea turtle dies caught in a net and bleeds to death… It isn’t too detailed, but it is heartbreaking… There is also some people who get hurt in the book. Nothing graphic but it does happen. There is also a “ghost” in the book. Mention of a pirate queen haunting the area. Nothing creepy and it isn’t magical.
Overall, it is such an extraordinary book! I love it soooooo much and totally suggest it to kids looking for a new, amazing and action filled adventure!!!!!! I hope there is a book 3!!!! -The Young Llama Reader.
Pros
- An AMAZING novel for kids 8 and up!
- Full of adventure, pirates and fun!!!
- Book 2 to a great series on science and friendship!
Cons
- Some violence and mention of blood…
Ghostly pirates, lost treasure, and high adventure abound in Fathomless, the sequel to Spineless, set in glittering Gilded Age Florida.
After months away at boarding school, Lulu Davenport was looking forward to summer vacation at her home on the southwest Florida coast, especially since her best friend, Algie Emsworth, will be spending his vacation with the Davenport family. But since his widowed mother has fallen on hard times, he’s gotten a job nearby that keeps him away from the house most of the day. And Frankie, Lulu’s sister and usual companion, is out of commission after injuring herself while sailing. But when Lulu hears about a possible haunting in a nearby abandoned fort and rumors of hidden treasure, she decides it’s time to strike out on her own and solve the mystery herself. In the process, she meets Vic, a blind boy who’s just moved to town, and the two of them embark on a hunt for clues about the ghostly appearances. Soon enough, Frankie and Algie join them, and the four friends uncover all sorts of very real dastardly deeds going on, and the villain is much closer to home than they expected!
Fathomless is full of hijinks, mystery, and heart, as Samantha San Miguel brings readers into the wild and wonderful world of nineteenth century Florida in this sparkling sequel to Spineless.
