Review
Can I just say this is a very confusing book! Don’t get me wrong, I did thoroughly enjoy the story, but my goodness does this novel take you on an adventure of a lifetime! With shapeshifting aliens, mutant thorny vines, a race against time and a great focus on family; The Sapphire Sword is a fantastic book for boys and girls 10 and up!!!
Slugger, Flint and Scout are your not so ordinary kids. But they didn’t think that would make them the keys to saving the very world as they know it! But the dog they rescued sure thinks so. (The talking alien dog that is) And now the 3 siblings are on a quest across the cosmos to save Earth from the evil pestilence, find their dad along the way, and discover the legendary Sapphire Sword too! What could go wrong…
This book was honestly pretty good. I will be waiting with anticipation for books 2 and 3! It was very humorous, with loads of adventure and tons of fun sci-fi worlds! It has a very Narnia or Adventures of Odyssey feel to it. The story’s main focus is on trusting each other and having faith. It’s a great family, sci-fi read for kids and teens alike!
Now there is violence in the book. Mention of dead animals, skeletons, man eating plants. Mention of blood and people losing hope. Mention of worlds dying or disappearing as well a a few chapters where everyone is in darkness and they act totally crazy. (Think zombie apocalypse without the dead part. Everyone is just afraid and can’t find the light. But it is creepy! Young kids might get freaked out.) The book is very clean, just remember, science fiction usually has a more thrilling plot line. Not horror. But everything tires to kill off the main characters throughout the book.
Overall, I totally suggest this book to kids who love an out of this world adventure! It is super fun and totally worth it. Though it did take me awhile to read due to the confusing plot line. Still a great novel though!!! -The Young Llama Reader.
Pros
- A Christian-friendly sci-fi series for kids!
- Funny and full of adventure!!!
Cons
- Some violence and sci-fi monsters…
To save the world from certain destruction, three siblings and their shapeshifting alien guide embark on an out-of-this-world adventure in search of an ancient, all-powerful weapon.
Slugger, Flint, and Scout are always out exploring the mountains of New Mexico near their home. When a cherry-picking expedition puts them in the path of a peculiar pooch in peril, the three siblings have no idea what unstoppable calamity has just been set in motion.
The dog they call Robin Hood isn’t what he appears to be. And neither are the O’Ryan kids.
Together, the three unlikely heroes and their trusty “canine” companion must journey the cosmos to snatch Earth back from the clutches of catastrophic evil. And they just might be successful.
