Review

Sooo… What to say about this novel… It has a cool cover? Interesting plot line? Oh! And it’s super sad, super weird, filled with fear and quite a bit of violence! Lovely right? (Prepare for a spoiler!!!)

This book is about Paul. A kid who just wants to play soccer and make a name for himself. Only problem, his super thick, giant glasses. Legally blind, Paul knows there is more to the story of how he gained his glasses. So when drama after drama begins happening after his family’s move to Florida, Paul begins making connections he didn’t know he remembered! And with it comes the truth he desperately wants to know. But will it be worth it all to see the light?…

The book sounded great! It had a fun cover, interesting characters and a fun plot line! However, that is where the pro’s end… Though the book seems like a enjoyable read, it is dark!!! I’m talking about kid totally afraid of his older brother killing him! I’m taking about murder! I’m talking about kids dying by lightning and such! And the SPOILER!!!! Paul got blinded by his brother and his friend when they held his eyelids open and spray-painted his eyes…….. Talk about dark… And his parents did no punishment for the big brother. In fact, the book is about how Paul fades in the background to his fathers plan for his big brothers football career. His parents praise Erik! His parents love Erik! His parents know Erik is violent and a thief and still adore him… Talk about turning the blind eye!!!

Overall, honestly I do NOT suggest this book. It is apparently kid-friendly for boys 11 and up; but it is horrible so… If you want to read this book, just know love and joy is not in it. Violence, death and sadness is though! Happy readings I guess? -The Young Llama Reader.

Pros

  • Interesting story.

Cons

  • Filled with fear, violence and sadness…
  • Not a great read…

Paul Fisher sees the world from behind glasses so thick he looks like a bug-eyed alien. But he’s not so blind that he can’t see there are some very unusual things about his family’s new home in Tangerine County, Florida.

Where else does a sinkhole swallow the local school, fire burn underground for years, and lightning strike at the same time every day? The chaos is compounded by constant harassment from his football-star brother.

Adjusting to life in Tangerine isn’t easy for Paul—until he joins the soccer team at his middle school. With the help of his new teammates, Paul begins to discover what lies beneath the surface of his strange new hometown. And he also gains the courage to face up to some secrets his family has been keeping from him for far too long.

In Tangerine, it seems, anything is possible.
