Review

Alright, so I was looking for a book (as usual…) and this one caught my eye. Soooooo of course I grabbed it, and I really enjoyed it. The book is about a 12 year old millionaire genius and criminal master-mind who kidnaps a fairy. How could you say no to that? (And I know it sounds really weird, but don’t worry… it is really weird.)

The book was very enjoyable, with lots of adventure, but it did have a lot of magic. Now I’m not really certain how to explain the magic, except it was weird. Like really weird, not voodoo weird just… weird. For instance, the fairies have to perform strange spells to get their powers back and if a fairy drank the “holy water”, it was poisonous…

Over all, I do suggest this book, but I am warning you that it does contain odd magic. Younger kids might want to ask their parents about it first, and some Christian readers will not like it.

UPDATE: After reading a few more books in this series, I am revising the score and bumping it lower for Faith-friendly and for youth-appropriate. The later books have more magic and even demons. I am giving up on this series. I am changing my recommendation and I do NOT recommend these books.

Pros

  • Funny, adventurous, and the first one in the series is mostly kid-friendly

Cons

  • Does have a lot of magic
  • Series gets darker with more magic and demons in later books

Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl is a millionaire, a genius-and, above all, a criminal mastermind. But even Artemis doesn’t know what he’s taken on when he kidnaps a fairy, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit. These aren’t the fairies of bedtime stories; these fairies are armed and dangerous.

Artemis thinks he has them right where he wants them, but then they stop playing by the rules.
