Summary
This book 3 in the Penderwick’s series, and I just love this series! It is super funny, very family focused and great books for girls 7 and up! It’s like a modern day Little Women except filled with waaayy more humor!
This book is about the Penderwick family and their 3 separate vacations. With their father, new mother and new baby step-brother off to Europe, and Rosalind off to the beach; the other 3 sisters are ready for a VK with their aunt in a cottage in Maine! But this summer is full of struggles for all 3 of them. With a nervous Skye in charge, a romance-stricken Jane working on a new book and a very uncertain Batty just wanting her sister back; the sisters aren’t certain this summer is going to live up to their expectations…
This novel was adorable as well as hilarious! Full of humor and adventure, it is perfect for young girls looking for a story about family and growing up! I just enjoy this series so much, and books 1, 2, and 3 have been just perfect! I very much suggest these fabulous novels!
Now, some stuff happens in the books which are very funny, but you should probably be aware of. Jane, (the 3rd child) has a VERY active imagination and tends to over dramatize things. Since this book isn’t totally Christian, Jane throughout the book has made up a firegod that she “prays” to that will grant a wish. It obviously doesn’t work so she instead asks Neptune for a wish. It doesn’t seem like she actually believes in them, Jane just reads too much and gets caught up in the moment. Also some injures happen in the book. Light mention of blood but not detailed.
Overall, this is another fantastic book that focuses on 1 family learning how to grow up and mature, while also keeping their love for one another strong! I totally suggest this sweet read to any family looking for a wonderful read-a-loud! -The Young Llama Reader.
Pros
- A fabulous, amazing adventure!
- Very kid-friendly!!!!
- A super fun novel about family and friendships!!!
Cons
- Some mention of praying to a firegod or Neptune which is hilarious and not actually true!
When summer comes around, it’s off to the beach for Rosalind . . . and off to Maine with Aunt Claire for the rest of the Penderwick girls, as well as their old friend, Jeffrey.
That leaves Skye as OAP (oldest available Penderwick)—a terrifying notion for all, but for Skye especially. Things look good as they settle into their cozy cottage, with a rocky shore, enthusiastic seagulls, a just-right corner store, and a charming next-door neighbor. But can Skye hold it together long enough to figure out Rosalind’s directions about not letting Batty explode? Will Jane’s Love Survey come to a tragic conclusion after she meets the alluring Dominic? Is Batty—contrary to all accepted wisdom—the only Penderwick capable of carrying a tune? And will Jeffrey be able to keep peace between the girls . . . these girls who are his second, and most heartfelt, family?
It’s a rollicking ride as the Penderwicks continue their unforgettable adventures in a story filled with laughs and joyful tears!
