Review

Let me just say that I would never give this book to a kid under 15! And this book is suggested for kids up to 15!!! It has sensitive topics, kind-of brings up adult stuff, and also has violence… No-no for children…

This book is about Richard, a young teen on a mission to find his cousin who went missing. But then he finds out that Malley started off running away but now someone is preventing her from coming home. Richard knows his cousin needs his help, but he can’t do it by himself, his only hope is Skink. A ragged, one-eyed, ex-governor of Florida who will stop at nothing to help the wildlife and save a young boys cousin.

Sooooo… this book was ok. It was fun, interesting and such. The story line was very good, the characters were decent, and the book was quite engaging. (I read it in like 3 hours) However, this book went in a very dark direction I wasn’t prepared for… (SPOILER!!!)

The book has mention of knifes, guns, bullets, blood, death and such. Which is pretty normal for this series. Until the book mentions (SPOILING NOW!!! how Malley runs away with a man she meet through a chat who lied and stole a bunch of times and is a stalker… He then hides Malley on a boat house in the middle of no-where while handcuffing her to the wheel so hard it leaves marks. There is mention that he kisses her a few times and he also talks about how he will hunt her down and marry her… Later on in the book he actually dies by an alligator… Now, nothing ELSE is described, Malley says he didn’t do anything else. However it was a bit dark, I felt a bit nervous and iffy about handing this novel to anyone younger than 15…)

Overall, I just don’t know if this book is one I suggest. For an adult, yes it’s a good read. For a kid or teen? No, I don’t suggest. This kind-of topic is just too much for a kid or teen. Deal with it and don’t read it. -The Young Llama Reader.

Pros

  • A interesting adventure.

Cons

  • Adult topics!
  • NOT for kids!
  • Violence, death, blood and more!
Richard’s cousin is missing, and his best hope of finding her rests with the wily, one-eyed, ex-governor of Florida. Carl Hiaasen introduces his iconic character Skink to a younger audience in this nail-biting adventure!

Classic Malley: her parents are about to ship her off to boarding school, so she takes off with some guy she met online… Poor Richard: he’s less of a rebel than Malley, and a lot less trusting. He knows his cousin is in trouble before she does. Wild Skink: he’s a ragged, one-eyed, ex-governor of Florida, and enough of a renegade to think he can track Malley down. With Richard riding shotgun, this unlikely pair scour the state, undaunted by blinding storms, crazed pigs, flying bullets, and giant gators.

In Carl Hiaasen’s outrageous, hilarious, and wildly dangerous state of Florida, there are a million places an outlaw might stash a teenage girl. A million unpleasant ways to die. And two who will risk everything to rescue a friend . . . and to, hopefully, exact a bit of swamp justice.
