Review
Alright, so a friend of mine was reading this book and told me about it, saying it was really good. And me being me, I went to the library, got the book (which was actually in the kid section), brought it home and read it. And this is what I have to say about it.
The book is about three kids with different backstories (some sadder than the others) trying to escape their homes. Now this book can get really… REALLY sad at different parts ’cause… ya know, they’re ESCAPING. People will get hurt (or die…) and it just gets sad… But surprising, the book was really good! Sure there was some depressing parts, but everything else was great.
Over all, really good book, I just won’t suggest it to kids or people who don’t like sad or real-life fiction.
Pros
- Surprisingly youth appropriate
- Really awesome/sad story
Cons
- Kind-of depressing
- A little bit violent
JOSEF is a Jewish boy living in 1930s Nazi Germany. With the threat of concentration camps looming, he and his family board a ship bound for the other side of the world . . .
ISABEL is a Cuban girl in 1994. With riots and unrest plaguing her country, she and her family set out on a raft, hoping to find safety in America . . .
MAHMOUD is a Syrian boy in 2015. With his homeland torn apart by violence and destruction, he and his family begin a long trek toward Europe . . .
All three kids go on harrowing journeys in search of refuge. All will face unimaginable dangers — from drownings to bombings to betrayals. But there is always the hope of tomorrow. And although Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud are separated by continents and decades, shocking connections will tie their stories together in the end.
