Review

This book is a great read! Full of adventure, family, trust and survival, this is a book that keeps you reading till the very last page!

This book is about Maya, a young girl basically imprisoned in her grandmothers house with no freedom, no joy and no friends. With dreams of the country her mother loved, Maya never thought she would see it herself. But with an unexpected turn of events, Maya is sent to live with her mothers family on a ranch with real wild horses! With danger, floods, mountain lions and more, this adventure might be more than Maya could handle.

I love a good horse book. And this novel did not disappoint! The adventure was soooo interesting, I loved the plot and the focus on true family was so well written. Girls 9 and up who are obsessed with horses would love this adventurous story!!!

Now there is violence. Since it’s about horses, there is a realistic quality in the book. Mention of how horses live, how stallions are kicked out of the herd, how it’s a struggle to find food and such. Mention of horses getting hurt, foals dying and some blood. The adventure part of the book does have some violence, but it isn’t gory. However, if a kid is more on the sensitive side, this might not be the book for them.

Overall, this is a great read and one I totally suggest! I will definitely be looking for more books by this author. Happy Reading!!! -The Young Llama Reader.

Pros

  • A fabulous novel!
  • Great for girls 9 and up!!!

Cons

  • Some violence

Maya lives like a captive.

At Grandmother’s house in California, everything is forbidden: friends, fun, even memories. And her life is built on lies — lies Grandmother tells about her dead mother, and lies Maya tells to impress or manipulate.

But then she moves to the vast Wyoming wilderness where her mother’s family awaits — kind, rugged people who have no tolerance for lies. They challenge Maya to confront the truth about who she is. And a mysterious mustang called Artemisia waits, too. She holds the key to Maya’s freedom.

But to find it, Maya will have to risk everything. . . including her life.
