Who is ready for a sad story about finding home where you least expect it? Because I wasn’t ready!!!! I cried through a few chapters of this book, but still ended up loving it. Just be ready for a sad story that will warm your heart!

This book is about Winifred, know as Fred, a young girl taken from her mother due to a misunderstanding. Fred knows her mom didn’t steal any prescription pills! Sure sometimes pill bottles end up in her coat pocket, and sometimes her mom can’t even make it out of bed without help, but she isn’t addicted! But till her mom can prove it, Fred is staying with Margery, a women who looks like she can rip a log in 2 but enjoys her lavender baths as well. And when Fred realizes Margery’s neighbor has a dog, she thinks maybe it won’t all be bad. That is till she sees the dog and how abused he is. Now Fred has to figure out where her life is leading her, and how to not care about the friends she is making along the way…

This book was just amazing! Though it is a sadder story, the novel takes you through a life of brokenness and hurt while showing you hope and love. It is inspiring, sweet, slightly heart-breaking but overall fabulous. This book would be a great read for girls 8 and up who like a sad but inspirational story!

Now there are some dark topics in the book. Mention of substance abuse. Pill bottles that are stolen. Mention of people in rehab, and their children being taken away. Mention of foster care and such. As well as mention of unhappy homes. And on top of all of that, this is also a sad dog story. There is a abused dog in the novel who gets injured and needs help. So prepare yourselves accordingly!

Overall, even though this book has sad parts, it is a wonderful read and one I do suggest! If you are looking for a sad, dog story that will make you smile and cry, this is it right here!!! -The Young Llama Read.

Pros

  • A very sweet, slightly sad story about finding home!
  • A great novel for girls 8 and up!

Cons

  • Some sad parts…
  • Mention of abuse and addiction…

From the moment Fred (never Winifred!) spots a scruffy little mutt with sad eyes, she knows she’s in big trouble. Toby’s in bad shape, and Fred longs to rescue him from the old man with the mile-long mean streak who lives next door.

But Margery — the straight-talking woman who is fostering Fred — says going over to their house is against the rules. And since Fred will only be around until her mother comes to grips with her dependence, Fred can’t let herself care too deeply. Not about Toby or Margery or Delia, a new classmate whose insistent friendship surprises Fred at every turn. Because the more Fred lets this lovable band of misfits into her heart, the harder it’ll be to leave them all behind.

In this story of loss and love, acclaimed author Cecilia Galante examines life’s difficult choices and how a girl plus the dog she loves can add up to finding family in the most unlikely places.
