Review

This was a book loaned to me by my good friends who knew how much I would enjoy it! And I did enjoy it! I have found that most Newbery Award books seem to have a real life read with a bit of unsuspected magic in them. Why? I don’t know, but I do enjoy the books when it happens!!!

This book is about a girl who is pretty ordinary all things considered. Miranda lives in a run down apartment with her mom, she goes to school with her best friend Sal, and she pretty much sticks to herself. Until Sal gets punched by some random kid, and suddenly doesn’t want to be friends anymore. And then Miranda starts getting notes from someone who knows things that haven’t happened yet… Including saving her friend’s life. But with more questions than answers Miranda doesn’t know what to do… But not doing something isn’t an option is it?

This book was fun, interesting and full of twists! It seems like a novel about a normal life, but it is a novel about a normal life when someone chooses to be extraordinary. It is simple, while also being simply amazing! A great book for kids 10 and up who love a good, clean, funny adventure with a little bit of time travel.

Now there are some sad things in the book. Mention of a man who is homeless and a little bit crazy. He gets beat on a lot and people don’t understand him. Mention of people getting hurt, punched and mention of someone getting hit by a car. Mention of a man running naked downtown. (Nothing is detailed or explained, just says he’s unclothed) Plus a mention of someone who judges a girl, not because she is a bit mean (which she can be) but because she is black. Which is horrible, but sadly there are people out there that judge by the outside not the inside.

Overall, this is a wonderful, thought provoking book that would be prefect for kids 10 and up! It is a great book for school, family reading or just a novel to read on your own time. I totally suggest this book and I hope you all have a beautiful day!!! -The Young Llama Reader.

Pros

  • A very good novel about life!
  • Interesting, funny and thought provoking.
  • An amazing book that is great for kids 10 and up!

Cons

  • Some mention of people getting hurt, people out of their minds and such.

This Newbery Medal winner that has been called “smart and mesmerizing,” (The New York Times) and “superb” (The Wall Street Journal) will appeal to readers of all types, especially those who are looking for a thought-provoking mystery with a mind-blowing twist.

Shortly after a fall-out with her best friend, sixth grader Miranda starts receiving mysterious notes, and she doesn’t know what to do. The notes tell her that she must write a letter—a true story, and that she can’t share her mission with anyone.

It would be easy to ignore the strange messages, except that whoever is leaving them has an uncanny ability to predict the future. If that is the case, then Miranda has a big problem—because the notes tell her that someone is going to die, and she might be too late to stop it.
