Review

This is another great Civil War story by Tara Johnson and it is amazing! This is a book about freedom and God’s love. It’s a story about seeing the truth for the very first time and deciding to do what’s right in a time of trouble. And it is an amazing novel!!!

This book is about Keziah Montgomery, a young women who struggles with her fainting illness that has brought shame upon her family. But when her childhood friend Dr. Micah Greyson shows her the truth about slavery, Kezzie realizes how blind she has been about her life. So when she is given a chance to save a young boy from slavery, she starts her journey as a conductor in the Underground Railroad. But her family is full of hate, and when her life is leading her away from her calling, Kezzie realizes she might have to start trusting Micah while the Civil War starts getting closer and closer to home…

This book was soooooo good! I just adored the story, the characters were amazing and the way everything came together was so well done! I will say I kind-of wanted a different ending. I just felt like the villains didn’t get what they deserve, but maybe I’m just revengeful? (Which I am… Don’t cross me people!!!!) However, the book was still fabulous and would be great for young ladies 18 and up!

Now there is violence in the book and some adult topics. Mention of blood, death, corpses and such. Mention of war but this book is more focused on the slavery side of the Civil War. Mention of people being mistreated and beaten. Mention of slaves being abused and women being used which is just heartbreaking! This book is a bit cleaner that the other novel All Through the Night. A bit gentler while also going through the life of a young women in the south who is willing to do what’s right to free her fellow humans.

Overall, this really is an incredibly story! I honestly enjoyed this book more than Ms. Johnson’s others and it might be one of my new favorites!!!! If you are looking for a interesting, romantic adventure set in the Civil War, I have just the book for you! -The Young Llama Reader.

Pros

  • A very moving novel about freedom!
  • A sweet romance set in the Civil War.
  • Great book for young ladies 18 and up!!!

Cons

  • NOT  a kids book…
  • Violence, death and slavery mentioned…

Reluctant debutante Keziah Montgomery lives beneath the weighty expectations of her staunch Confederate family, forced to keep her epilepsy secret for fear of a scandal. As the tensions of the Civil War arrive on their doorstep in Savannah, Keziah sees little cause for balls and courting. Despite her discomfort, she cannot imagine an escape from her familial confines―until her old schoolmate Micah shows her a life-changing truth that sets her feet on a new path . . . as a conductor in the Underground Railroad.

Dr. Micah Greyson never hesitates to answer the call of duty, no matter how dangerous, until the enchanting Keziah walks back into his life and turns his well-ordered plans upside down. Torn between the life he has always known in Savannah and the fight for abolition, Micah struggles to discern God’s plan amid such turbulent times.

Battling an angry fiancé, a war-tattered brother, bounty hunters, and their own personal demons, Keziah and Micah must decide if true love is worth the price . . . and if they are strong enough to survive the unyielding pain of war.
