Review

So, my reading genre is hard to pin down. I kind-of like a lot of different books. Sci-fi, fantasy, Christian, romance, historical, as well as books for kids 8-12… And possibly the weirdest books I read are the ones for boys 8 and up that are filled with humor, adventure and some potty-talk language… Like this book for instance!

This book is about Nick, a kid just trying to survive school and his evil biology teacher. But when Mrs. Starch goes missing in the Everglades, it’s up to Nick, his friend Marta, the class arsonist and a mystery millionaire to save the day from a corrupt oil company. And they better do it fast or they will have to scat!

This book was soooo funny! I laughed so hard at times! This novel is filled with adventure in the wilderness of Florida, danger from panthers seeking revenage and suspense of a oil deep mystery that needs to be solved! It is sooooo good! Totally suggest it to boys 9 and up who love a good, funny, adventurous story!

Now, as I mentioned before there is some parts of the book some people may not love. For instance, lots of mentions of the word ‘Scat’ used in both terms. As well as some funny parts like when a guy got glued to a tree in his birthday suit. Not a thing is described but it is mentioned. Plus there is about 10 curse words throughout the book. As well as some violence. Mention of people getting bit, scratched, hurt, mention of war in Iraq and explosions. Mention of people getting shot and lost in the Everglades and such as well. Nothing is too described or detail; the book is very clean but it is in there.

Overall, this book was awesome!!! I totally loved it and need to read the others right now!!!!!!! I definitely suggest this novel to kids, both boys and girls alike! I hope you all have a Hat-tatsic day!!! -The Young Llama Reader

Pros

  • A totally hilarious book for boys!!!
  • Super funny, super clean and super good!
  • A great read for kids 9 and up!!!

Cons

  • Some potty-month talk…
  • Some violence mentioned.

Carl Hiaasen takes us deep in the Everglades with an eccentric eco-avenger, a ticked-off panther, and two kids on a mission to find their missing teacher. Florida—where the animals are wild and the people are wilder!

Bunny Starch, the most feared biology teacher ever, is missing. She disappeared after a school field trip to Black Vine Swamp. And, to be honest, the kids in her class are relieved.

But when the principal tries to tell the students that Mrs. Starch has been called away on a “family emergency,” Nick and Marta just don’t buy it. No, they figure the class delinquent, Smoke, has something to do with her disappearance.

And he does! But not in the way they think. There’s a lot more going on in Black Vine Swamp than any one player in this twisted tale can see. It’s all about to hit the fan, and when it does, the bad guys better scat.
