Review
This book was sent to me by the author, (Thank you Shannon!) and it is a wonderful book about creepy-crawlies and learning to trust others!
This book is about Quill Jenkins, a 16 year old who’s life has fallen apart. With his dad’s drinking problems and his brother leaving, Quill and his mom have to rent a dump of a house. He desperately wants his family back together, but with no idea how to make that happen, he looks for a job. Unable to find one, Quill decides it’s time for extreme measures and starts breeding roaches in his attic without his mom knowing. With bullies, chess matches, failed math tests and more, Quill has to learn to trust others while keeping his secrets close to his heart.
This book was amazing! I loved the plot sooo much! The novel is a wonderful story about desperation that leads to friendship and hope. Boys 12 and up would love this book! (And so would girls as long as you can handle creepy-crawly information about roaches!) There is bullying in the book. Some mention of fights as well as alcohol.
There is LGBT in the book as well. Disclaimer, I do not dislike LGBT people, however, I am a Christian and God is very clear in the Bible on that topic. So I do not support LGBT content. In the book a teacher and her wife are mention on pages 185 and 189. It is 2 sentences. I don’t see the need to even have that content in there.
Overall, this is a wonderful book and one I totally suggest!!!!! It is a great read and I loved the story sooooo much! -The Young Llama Reader.
Pros
- A wonderful book for boys 12 and up!
- Funny, uplifting and interesting!!!
Cons
- Mention of bullying.
- LGBT warning…
Quill Jenkins used to have a great life: a picture-perfect family, a big house in a nice neighborhood, and a best friend he could count on. But then his friend moved away, his brother left for college, and his dad’s drinking caused his parents to split. Now Quill and his mom live in a broken-down rental house owned by a neglectful landlord, who also happens to be the father of Quill’s high school nemesis.
More than anything, Quill wants to save enough money for a new house, but his mom refuses to let him get a job. So when he finds a hidden attic space inside his closet, then overhears the pet store owner arguing with a delinquent roach breeder, an idea is born. He strikes a deal and starts breeding roaches in the hidden room, reluctantly working with his classmate Harley and Harley’s twin sister, Zuri, to keep the whole operation a secret.
But as the roach business takes off, new complications arise: his dad’s condition steadily worsens, his beloved neighbor Mr. Dave suddenly goes MIA, and Quill learns that the truth has a way of creeping into the light.
