Review

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a story I have loved throughout my childhood! I have 3 series based off of the classic that I also adore, but the original story is perfection!!!!!! (And I also love and suggest the movie of course!!!!)

This book is about a French professor with a love of the sea. When a mysterious monster begins targeting ships, a vessel is put together to end this evil that is plaguing the ocean. But when the ship fails in its mission, the professor, his assistant and a Canadian harpooner, fall overboard into an adventure they never thought they would have. Now on the Nautilus, a other-worldly submarine run by Captain Nemo, the 3 friends begin their journey around the world… under the water.

This book is AMAZING!!!!!! I have watched the movie a lot, I have also read quite a few stories related to the original book. (Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordan, Young Captain Nemo by Jason Henderson and Atlantis: The Accidental Invasion by Gregory Mone) But the classic is possibly my favorite out of all of these!!!! It has adventure, action, interesting plot line, amazing characters and a wonderful story-line! This is a great novel that families would love to read together!

Now there is some violence in the book. Mention of people drowning, ships being attacked, corpses underwater and such. One mention of a wounded person dying. Plus animals being hunted and killed for food, but also for sport. (At one point in the story, Captain Nemo kills a whole bunch of marine animals and covers the sea in blood for miles… Little bit gross and a tad bit crazy…) There are also tons of fish descriptions that I sometimes got bored of reading. (It is my guess that the book could be 70 pages shorter if the professor didn’t describe any fish 🙂 )

Overall, this is one of my new favorite reads ever!!!!!!!!!! I love the story sooooo much and I am so glad I got to enjoy the classic by Jules Verne! If you are looking for a classic to read that isn’t too hard to understand as well as being fun; this would be the book for you to enjoy! -The Young Llama Reader.

Pros

  • A wonderful classic!
  • Adventurous and exciting!!!!
  • Tons of interesting underwater fun facts!

Cons

  • Mention of dark topics and violence…

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne.

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is a classic science fiction novel by French writer Jules Verne published in 1870.

It tells the story of Captain Nemo and his submarine Nautilus, as seen from the perspective of Professor Pierre Aronnax after he, his servant Conseil, and Canadian whaler Ned Land wash up on their ship.

With no way to escape from their underwater prison, the story shows the life of the sea through a wonderful new prospective.

On the Nautilus, the three embark on a journey which has them going all around the world, under the sea.
